International Day of Happiness

happinessactsDid you know that Thursday, March 20, 2014 is the International Day of Happiness? Now I know it seems like there is a day for everyone and everything, some just to make you smile-remember “Talk Like a Pirate Day”? But your random acts of kindness can make a difference for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America. Let’s show the world our light today by doing something for someone else, and then post it to the wall so we can multiply that goodness. Let’s see if we can make this go viral, instead of all the anger and ranting we see across the internet.

This is a quote from Ann Voskamp whose blog echoes with lyricism and truth:

“Sure, anger sells. Anger sells news and anger gets microphones and shares and anger is what goes most viral.
That’s the thing: Anger goes most viral —- because it’s what makes you most sick.
Read all the angry and share the madness and spread the viral and it isn’t healthy —- it only further polarizes real people and freezes your soul to death.”

These things we can do don’t have to be big, just enough to make someone smile. Grab the garbage can for your neighbor, hold the door for that stranger whose hands are full, let the person who obviously needs to be somewhere urgently into that lane.

Acts of Happiness are small things—with a big impact. They’re every day, thoughtful expressions that others do for us—and that we intentionally do for others.

So, come on! Make someone’s day—and yours—a little brighter. Read below for information on how to participate.

How can you participate?

1. Do an Act of Happiness. It does not have to be big – in fact, even the smallest expression of kindness can make a big impact on someone’s day.

2. Visit http://actsofhappiness.org/ to post your act the virtual happiness wall.

3. Spread the word. Encourage your friends to do the same.

4. Follow along: check out #HappyActs to see what’s happening across the world, and to stay inspired!

Plus for every act of happiness added to the virtual wall Nerium International will donate $1 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, up to $25,000.

Today I am thankful for random acts of kindness, Talk Like a Pirate Day, and Nerium International for promoting these acts of happiness and helping Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
